Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. (Psalm 122:9)
“I will pray for your good.” One of the definitions of love is “willing the goodness of the other” and since we are to love our neighbor as ourself, we should also be praying for one another and praying for good things to come to one another. You may be upset at someone for taking a new job, or you may be competing with someone else for a position at work, or maybe you’re competing for customers or for patients, maybe you’re both chasing after the same spot on the sports team or in a play, maybe you and your friend are both after the same girl or guy. Maybe you’ve fallen out of favor with a former friend or employer and you can’t even stand the sight of them or you cringe at the sound of your name. The old saying “all is fair in love and war,” or “it’s business, not personal,” may be the way some might treat all of these situations, but we hear today how God’s plan is different—“I will pray for your good.” We aren’t to wish harm on others or pray that only we get what we want, but we are to pray for good things to befall one another! We are to pray that goodness comes to us all, whether someone is a friend or a foe! We are to ask the LORD to help our friends, our enemies, our family, and our competitor because we are ALL in this together and we are ALL children of God! Pray for others today, pray for your enemies today, pray for anyone you meet today, and know that I, others all over the world, and the Saints and Angels in Heaven will be praying for you too, my sisters and brothers in Christ! Amen!
